Deidre Scherer: Biography

Deidre Scherer studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. She developed her distinct, narrative approach to fiber while raising her family, and has worked with fabric and thread as her primary medium since the late 1970's. Deidre has addressed the issues of aging and mortality by building a series of images based on elders and mentors in her community.

Since the late-80's, Deidre has presented her work at American Craft Council Fairs, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Shows, and at the Smithsonian Craft Shows. Her work has been represented in over 100 shows nationally, including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, MA; the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY; the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Brattleboro, Vt; and the Baltimore Museum of Art in Baltimore, MD.

Internationally her work has traveled to exhibitions in Canada, England, and Japan. In 1996, Deidre gave the keynote lecture at the National Festival of the Embroiderer's Guild in Durham, England. Her work is found in private collections worldwide and in public collections including The Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museum of Science in Boston, MA, and St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Many people have been introduced to Deidre's images through renowned book covers such as When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple (Papier-Mache Press). In 1998, C & T Publishing released her book Deidre Scherer: Work in Fabric & Thread.

In 1994, Deidre received a Fellowship from the Vermont Arts Council. From 2000 through 2001, having received a Fellowship from The Open Society Institute's Project on Death in America, she focused on her new series, Surrounded by Family and Friends. Between May and July of 2001, the inaugural exhibition was on display at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. It will be traveling to locations throughout the states including Montreal in October of 2002.

Deidre and her husband live in Vermont where she works full time as a studio artist.
